When the Pilgrims arrived in America in 1620, they brought along supplies, a consuming passion to advance the Kingdom of Christ, a bright hope for the future, and the Word of God. Clearly, their most precious cargo was the Bible. Have you ever wondered what version of the Bible the Pilgrims brought to America on the Mayflower? Believe it or not, it was not the King James Version of 1611. It was actually the 1599 Geneva Bible – a forgotten yet priceless treasure.

The Geneva Bible, printed over 200 times between 1560 and 1644, was the most widely read and influential English Bible of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. This superb translation was the product of the best Protestant scholars of the day and became the Bible of choice for many of the greatest writers, thinkers, and historical figures of that time. Men such as Shakespeare, John Bunyan, and John Milton used the Geneva Bible, and it was reflected in their writings. During the English Civil War, Oliver Cromwell issued a pamphlet containing excerpts from the Geneva Bible to his troops. William Bradford cited the Geneva Bible in his book Of Plymouth Plantation.

The Geneva Bible is unique among all other Bibles. It was the first Bible to use chapters and numbered verses and became the most popular version of its time because of the extensive marginal notes. These notes, written by Reformation leaders such as John Calvin, John Knox, Miles Coverdale, William Whittingham, Anthony Gilby, and others, were included to explain and interpret the scriptures for the common people.

For nearly half a century these notes helped the people of England, Scotland, and Ireland understand the Bible and true liberty. King James despised the Geneva Bible because he considered the notes on key political texts to be seditious and a threat to his authority. Unlike the King James Version, the Geneva Bible was not authorized by the government. It was truly a Bible by the people and for the people. You can see why this remarkable version with its profound marginal notes played a key role in the formation of the American Republic.

Sadly, 407 years after its original publication, this wonderful version of the Bible has been nearly forgotten. The only complete version available today is a large, cumbersome, and difficult-to-read facsimile edition. A facsimile edition contains pictures of the original pages. The small print and the older English letters and spellings make it nearly impossible to read or study. If the 1599 Geneva Bible is to survive the passing of time and be remembered for generations to come, it must be resurrected and redistributed.
“The publication and promulgation of the 1599 Geneva Bible will help restore America’s rich Christian heritage and reclaim the culture for Christ.” -- Dr. D. James Kennedy, Senior Pastor of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church

The Puritan's Bible
Nicholas Buchanan (Seattle, WA) 2/9/2010 12:10 PM
Hello all, I want to begin out by thanking Tolle Lege for delivering such a beautiful book by restoring it to its best. If more people began reading this bible, we definitely would see more greatness in our country happening. I would recommend our President own and read this bible. The commentary, oh the commentaries! What would I have done not for the commentaries! It is what constitutes for the greatness this bible delivers. This is too good to miss given the opportunity that it is back in print which means a lot to everyone. The commentaries has God as the master author of the human race the Alpha and Omega, and nothing else. The commentators kept that in mind in coherence throughout the books. You will find the commentary's english style consistent with the bible verses. Example: 1 Cor 4:2 "(1)And as for the rest, it is required of the disposers, that every man be found faithful." (1)Last of all, he warneth the ministers that they also behave themselves not as lords, but as faithful servants, because they must render an account of their stewardship unto God. This is good reminder to our preachers! This bible has thus humbled me and quicken my spirit since I bought this beautiful Word of God. There however has been few places where the verse numbering are different than modern bibles (Geneva was the first so I honor theirs rather than modern), and the commentary numbering is wrong in several places such as 1 tim 2:3,4.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!

I would have thought for certain that anything written in 1599 would be difficult to read because the English would be very different. Wrong thinking on my part! I find this Bible incredibly easy to read, much easier than the KJV (which I still like). I also really like all the wonderful notes. This Bible has quickly become a wonderful treasure to me and it is now my primary Bible that I will use everyday. If it was good enough for men like John Knox, John Bunyan and many other rock solid Christians of long ago including the Puritans and the Pilgrims, it certainly is more than good enough for me. Most of the comments I have found on the blogs are very favorable of this Bible. One comment, however, was that while this Bible was thought to be very good, there are much better translations of today. I totally disagree with that comment. The bottom line is that the best Bible is the one that you will read, but all I can say about this Bible is that I have never had the Bible be as alive to me as the 1599 Geneva is. It may be different for others, but for me all the other translations pale in comparison. I thank the Lord for this wonderful effort that has been done and I am very grateful to the group of people that brought this effort to a finish. The only change I can think of is possibly having a large print edition, although that would most likely mean a very large and heavy Bible or two volumes.

Good, some slight issues

For the most part, this is a very good bible. Just the fact that someone has decided to reprint it at all in a modern format is impressive. There is no lack of margin notes, and they are often useful to help with the older style of writing. Just a couple things to be aware of. As with most bibles, it seems, the pages are very thin. There are times where it can be easy to get distracted by background text from another page. This seems to get better the longer it's been out of the plastic seal. In addition, the font is fairly small. Surprisingly, my copy was fairly thin, so the overall impression is almost that the publishers overcompensated for how thick they thought it would be. My main grievance is with the cover. No, there is nothing wrong with it. But do you see that nice burgundy embossed hardcover? That is not the actual cover, at least on my copy. My copy had a rather bright painting of what appears to be a pilgrim gathering, or perhaps another early congregation that used this particular bible. On the back are self-advertisements, such as would try and convince a browser in a physical store to buy the book. Needless to say, this kind of bothers me. I'll probably be buying a nice cover for it, but still. You expect to receive what you saw on the website. I'll be sending an email to the store right after I finish this. Overall it's definitely interesting. If you can get past the little quirks (which most modern bibles will share, I might add), this is definitely worth the money. Especially since you also receive a cd with the entire text of the Geneva Bible, Apocrypha, and metric psalms. Get a nice cover, though!
